In honor of George Washington's birthday and the United States 250th anniversary, Alexandria, his adopted hometown, will be holding The George Washington's Birthday Parade in mid-February.
The City of Alexandria has held the George Washington's birthday parade since 1801, making it the oldest parade like it in the United States.
Using the theme "George Washington: Virginia's Son ~ America's Founding Father” more than a thousand marchers will participate this year.
The parade route will begin at the intersection of Fairfax and Gibbon Streets and continue north passed City Hall to Queen Street, turn west for one block and turn south on Royal Street ending at Wilkes Street. The reviewing stand will be on King Street.
Other festivities of parade day will include the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Old Presbyterian House, 321 S. Fairfax Street from noon to 1:00 pm. Admission will be free. Beginning at 6:30 pm Gadsby's Tavern Museum, 134 N. Royal Street, will host the annual George Washington's Birthnight Dinner. Guests can expect a four-course dinner and wine that has been inspired by the period. Tickets are $150.
Towns that host events such as this often have pictures taken during the festivities. These photos then go to local Stationery printers to be made into Postcards that are then sold in selected stores around town.
The parade will take place from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on February 14th.
