Many Alexandria history buffs will be heading to Mt. Vernon as it celebrates our nation's independence in July.
On July 4th beginning at 9:00 am, Mt. Vernon, George Washington's estate, 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy, will begin activities and a naturalization ceremony will take place at 10:00 am. The Interpretive Center will have costumed people explaining their daily lives and answering questions. Sons of the American Revolution will be laying an Independence Day wreath at Washington's Tomb at 10:30 am. The bowling green will feature a performance by the National Concert Band at 11:30 am.
A special day time fireworks display will be shot over the Potomac River at 1:00 pm. On the bowling green at 1:30 pm, the estate's resident fifer will hold a demonstration of different flutes, fifes and a drum and discuss their different functions and sounds. That will be followed at 2:00 pm with a Military drill and review of the Troops.
All-day activities will include a military encampment, the Half Crown Bakehouse, and concessions. This event will close at 5:00 pm.
From 6:00 to 9:30 pm, in the evening version, guests can enjoy iced cream, blacksmithing and dance styles demonstrations and lawn and tavern games. Fireworks will begin at 9:15 pm.
