Alexandria welcomes tall ships arrival

Sails on the Potomac will take place here in Alexandria in mid-June.

Commemorating the American Revolution's 250th anniversary, the three days of festivities will center on the tall ships Gazela, Kalmar Nyckel, Providence, and Sultana docked along the waterfront. Ship tours will be free, but all visitors must have timed tickets and advance reservations are strongly recommended to avoid missing out.

A 250th History Village and Outpost will be an outdoor learning experience featuring pop-up interactive exhibits, historic regional organizations, and demonstrations. Official Sails on the Potomac merchandise will be available for purchase. Festivities like this usually get their event merchandise printed with the event's logo at local Print shops.

Receptions will be held each evening on the Kalmer Nyckel, where heavy appetizers and beer, wine, and sodas will be served. The Ship Captain and crew will be mingling with guests. Ticket prices are $250 for the Friday and Sunday evening receptions and $350 for the Saturday Evening Gala that will include fireworks. The receptions will take place from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

ALX Jazz Fest will be part of the weekend with free performances every day. The theme for June 12 will be Americana Roots, June 13 will be American Jazz & Poetry, and June 14 will be Future Sounds of America. Saturday's show will end with fireworks at 9:00 pm.

Sails on the Potomac will take place June 12 through 14 at Alexandria Waterfront, most of which will be in Waterfront Park, 1A Prince Street.
