Traditional holiday parade returns

Alexandria locals know to reserve the first weekend in December for Alexandria’s Biggest Holiday Weekend.

Two of the biggest events in Old Alexandria will be the annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade and its kick-off event Taste of Scotland.

This year, the parade organizers City of Alexandria and Visit Alexandria have teamed up with Campagna Center, an organization offering programs for social development and educational programs for adults, teens, and children, to present this year’s walk.

The weekend will begin with Taste of Scotland at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105, N. Union Street. The gala will offer hors d-oeuvres, beer, and wine bars, whiskey-tasting stations, and a special art exhibit compliments of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Taste of Scotland will take place December 2 from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Proceeds from the event will go to the programs offered by Campagna Center.

The Scottish Christmas Walk Parade which has been an annual Alexandria Christmas event over the last 51 years, will have Scottish clans clad in traditional tartans, along with pipe and drum bands, and units of terriers and hounds marching through Old Town Alexandria.

Other entries such as floats, vehicles, and animals will have Scottish themes, holiday costumes, props, and decorations. Units are encouraged to get some banner printing done to introduce the entries to the spectators, and inflatables and balloons under 12 feet high are also welcome.

The walk will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 3 and usually lasts about 90 minutes.
