The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is looking for volunteers here in Alexandria and other Virginia locations to help clean debris and litter from the Chesapeake Bay watershed's streams, rivers, parks and beaches for its 36th Annual Clean the Bay Day. This event has been scheduled for early June.
This will be a community event, so all families, individuals, civic groups and businesses are invited to participate, and registration is required. Registration will close on May 28th. Volunteers here in Alexandria will be contacted by e-mail or phone about where to meet at designated locations around the city.
A Zone Captain will be needed for each location to check the volunteers in and report data back to a local coordinator. Each Zone Captain will also go over clean-up information including safety review, review what to gather and volunteer data cards, and locations of litter collection sites. They will discuss how to deal with sensitive habitat, take headcounts and place volunteers into teams. Volunteer data cards will be distributed, and the Zone Captain will be sure all volunteers check out and materials are returned.
Often some dedicated environmental groups will go to local Print shops and get colorful matching T-Shirts printed to show their solidarity while participating in events like this.
This year's 36th Annual Clean the Bay Day will take place June 7th from 9:00 am to noon.
