Alexandria's transit company Driving Alexandria Safely Home, or DASH, is expected to receive about $5.1 million to purchase six electric buses and fast chargers.
The buses run on batteries and produce zero emissions. Representatives of the city and DASH are in the process of acquiring and buying the buses. It will take up to 18 months to organize their delivery. By 2020, the new buses will need improvements within the DASH location.
Josh Baker, CEO and General Manager of DASH, hopes it will be the first company in Virginia to drive this type of bus to generate revenue. According to the Alexandria Gazette Packet, the company's goal in the long term is to phase out diesel buses and begin incorporating more electric alternatives. Previously, DASH began to purchase buses that have clean diesel engines.
The Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust, also called the VW Trust, is the source of funding for purchasing the vehicles, along with transit capital funds from the state. Those who receive funds must have the new electric buses on the road within the next two years.
DASH is not the only transit company receiving funds. Blacksburg Transit will get $3.3m to fund five buses and Hampton Roads Transit will fund six buses after it received $3.9m.
Flyer printing services can let the community know about the transition to electric buses and the benefits of clean public transportation.
