Annual art festival in Alexandria goes virtual

Alexandria's yearly Art on the Avenue will start soon, but will take place online this year.

This is the 25th installment of the event, which helps local artists to display their work to the community. Having the event online allows virtual activities to become a part of the festival while increasing networking opportunities with any participant no matter how far away they live. It also provides a safe environment for guests and artists by providing social distancing.

According to Pat Miller, creator of Art on the Avenue, art has given people entertainment, a sense of peace, and community. In order to protect the welfare of artists and guests, there will not be a physical location for the festival. However, the festival was too iconic to cancel, and many artists rely on the exposure and support.

Amy Eggers, chair of Art on the Avenue for 2020, expressed enthusiasm in a virtual option to keep the tradition alive. Artists can spend the rest of the year communicating with the local community, sharing virtual Business Cards, and keeping art alive.

Each piece of art on display was made by hand such as pottery thrown on a wheel. Many clothing items were knitted, crocheted, or woven. Glass items were blown and fused individually.

Art on the Avenue will start on October 3 and will end after the winter holidays.
