Santa is abandoning his sleigh for waterskis for the 33rd annual Waterskiing Santa event this Christmas.
The waterskiing event is a free show that many now consider a holiday tradition. In 1986, a group of friends dared each other to perform a stunt that made its way on the local news. The sight drew so many spectators, the same friends did the stunt again the following year.
Santa and Mrs. Claus attend the event each year along with some other well-known holiday characters. The Grinch, Rudolph, and a few elves also often appear. The show takes place on the Potomac River and typically runs from about Lumley Park to the Torpedo Factory. The best place to view the action is at Waterfront Park.
The preshow includes jet ski riders, and following Santa’s display of his waterskiing talents, everyone can come to the Torpedo Factory and meet the Clauses. The stars of the show will only have about 30 minutes to meet with the crowd because of Santa’s plans later that night, but pictures are welcome. Children who arrive early will usually have the chance to sit on Santa’s lap. Guests can also meet the other holiday characters as they mingle with the crowd.
The event is likely to offer unique images for Christmas cards and other holiday printing services. It takes place at Alexandria’s waterfront between King and Oronoco Streets on Christmas Eve, with waterskiing beginning at 12:45 PM.
