TJC to offer new program in emergency management

Tyler Junior College (TJC) is planning to offer a Bachelor of Applied Science in Emergency Management to enable students to become professionally qualified to serve in the areas of disaster and crisis response.

The program will teach students how to prepare for crisis management activities, responses to direct disasters; establish emergency plans and procedures for natural or technological disasters; and oversee disaster preparedness. Other skills to be covered in the program will be risk assessment, decision-making, critical thinking, and organization and planning. The program will have an online format.

Professors will provide students with personalized attention and real-life experiences. The online format will offer convenience and flexibility for students who may already be working in public agencies. The cost of the program is affordable, and many employers may cover the cost of tuition.

Such programs often benefit from brochure printing which can offer more details about requirements, courses, and costs.

Chair of the Emergency Management Department, Paul Findley, said the program is designed to incorporate the support of a program based on the cohort model, and provide the benefits of one-on-one educational experience. He added that there are many opportunities for employment in this area, not only in county and municipal governments, but also at the state and national level.

The program will begin in Fall 2023.
