Special solar eclipses to be highlighted in Tyler

The Earth and Space Science Center at Tyler Junior College (TJC) is getting ready for solar eclipses to occur next year and in 2024.

Dr. Beau Hartweg, director of the science center at TJC, said that these are rare celestial events and stargazers need to plan well ahead for them. He added that the center has many plans for the public and hopes to be the premier viewing destination in East Texas. Such special activities can be promoted throughout a region with Flyers and mailers created by local Print shops.

The first eclipse will be on October 14, 2023, when the moon is at its greatest distance from the Earth and does not block the sun entirely, but has a ring around it from the sun. On April 24, 2024, there will be a total eclipse when the sun is entirely blocked by the moon and creates a period of darkness for a total of two minutes.

Hartweig said that there will be a new show at the planetarium and other resources for the community as the dates for these events get closer. There is also a new touchscreen display to help visitors learn about the eclipses, and printed educational materials will be available, which is another opportunity for local Print shops to participate in these once-in-a-lifetime events. Viewing locations for the eclipses will also be announced in due course.
