Special camp for children with asthma to be offered in Tyler

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and the Texas Chest Foundation Fund at the East Texas Communities Foundation will be sponsoring its summer camp at Camp Tyler for children between the ages of 7 and 14 who have asthma.

The Texas Asthma Camp is on Lake Tyler and is an asthma camp that is among the largest and oldest in Texas. It has been opened since 1985 and educated over 2,000 children. During the six days at the camp, children participate in many traditional summer camp activities. There is also medical support from those from the University of Texas Health Science Center, with a clinic opened 24 hours a day offering special equipment.

UT Tyler nursing students provide educational opportunities and Tyler Junior College respiratory therapy students are camp counselors.

Rhonda Scoby, director of the camp, said that children who attend this kind of camp learn more about the effect of asthma on their bodies and how to enjoy summer activities in the same way as children without the disease.

The camp will be from July 8 through July 13 at Camp Tyler.
