Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an international honor society for community colleges, has announced that Dr. Juan E. Mejia, president of Tyler Junior College (TJC), is a winner of the prestigious Paragon Award.
There were 500 college presidents eligible to receive this award and Mejia is one of 22 recipients, and one of the two selected in Texas. Students from their respective colleges nominate recipients of this award. Announcements of such awards are often made known throughout the community with flyer printing and other printed materials.
TJC professor and PTK faculty sponsor, Gigi Deik, said that the students wanted to nominate Mejia as he has been a champion of student success, community involvement, and leadership. Deik expressed the pride of the entire college community of the exemplary work which has made possible the naming him a Paragon President.
Mejia expressed his honor in being recognized this way. He added that it is really the faculty, staff, administrators, and students whom he feels privileged to work with who are deserving of this recognition. State Senator Bryan Hughes congratulated Dr. Mejia on winning this award given to new presidents as he has been able to move the college forward during a very difficult time.
Mejia will be given the award at PTK Catalyst 2021, the organization’s annual convention, in April in Orlando, Florida.
