President of college in Tyler to receive award

The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) has awarded Dr. Juan E. Mejia, president and CEO of Tyler Junior College (TJC), the Western Regional Chief Executive Officer Award for 2021.

Criteria used to judge the nominees for this award are extensive. There are specific questions about the CEO in the following areas:

• Recognition in the college, community or across the country for their leadership
• The development and support two-year postsecondary associations across the country
• Demonstration of a caring attitude about the college and the community
• Development of innovative programs
• Additional characteristics that would be reason to be nominated for the award.

Mejia has been with TJC for three years and during that time has worked with several government agencies and organizations to enable community colleges in Texas to award four-year degrees. He is committed to the mission of community colleges, the students at TJC and the East Texas community, and respected for his expertise and wisdom on higher education. Announcements of such prestigious awards are often made known throughout a community with poster printing.

Mejia will receive the award at the annual ACCT Leadership Conference that will be held in San Diego in October. The ACCT Leadership Congress is a major annual conference for leaders of community college and the only national conference dedicated to the trustees of community colleges.
