National awards bestowed on media organization at college in Tyler

The DrumBeat Student Media of Tyler Junior College (TJC) earned three Pinnacle awards at the College Media Association Convention held this year.

The DrumBeat won second place in the Two-Year TV Station of the Year, the Two-Year Radio Station of the Year, and the Division III Periodic Newspaper of the Year.

Announcements of such awards is often disseminated throughout a college community with poster printing.

Students from TJC run the DrumBeat, which is an independent media organization. It produces a website, an app, a live broadcast, a printed newspaper, and a podcast and is involved in social media management. Students of all majors can take part in the organization, which is one of the student organizations that is the oldest at the college. Student journalists create the bi-weekly student newspaper which has covered topics such as student organizations, community involvement, and campus construction.

A live broadcast is produced every other week. Breaking news, campus events, and interviews with faculty, coaches, and student leaders are some of the areas covered in this broadcast.

Professor of mass communication and faculty advisor for DrumBeat, Kasi Dickerson, expressed their honor in being recognized at the national level. Dickerson added that students work hard every day to learn how to adapt to the world of journalism and to sharpen their skills and that this award demonstrates how talented they are.
