Funds for student success awarded to TJC

The United States Department of Education has awarded Tyler Junior College (TJC) its first Title III grant.

This grant will be in the amount of $440,000 every year for the next five years and will enable the college to empower the diverse population of its students. The funds will go towards the “Strengthening Institutions” program that support underserved students by enhancing their fiscal stability, academic quality, and institutional management.

News of such grants and their benefits for students is often made known throughout a campus community with flyer printing.

TJC has made noteworthy progress over the last 10 years in boosting students’ success. Among the programs to have transformed student outcomes are the Quality Enhancement Program at the college, TJC Promise, and the Rusk TJC Citizens Promise. These initiatives have provided dedicated mentors and coaches to students, improving their retention, persistence, and academic performance.

The grant will build on these initiatives by appointing two success coaches and a dedicated administrator to provide guidance on transfer services and careers, investing in training for staff and faculty to ensure they are well-equipped to support student success, and establishing an endowment with the TJC Foundation to ensure these efforts are maintained over the long term.

Mitch Andrews, vice president of institutional advancement, led a TJC executive task force to apply for this grant.
