Coveted award bestowed on Tyler faculty

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses has been awarded to Judith Bell, a nurse at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Winnsboro and an adjunct faculty member of the nursing program at Tyler Junior College (TJC).

Such announcements are often made known throughout the community with banner printing.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem. The award is given by the DAISY Foundation which was founded two years ago and enables patients and their families to nominate nurses who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their profession. Nominations for the award are gathered from those in the CHRISTUS system. Those who win the award receive a certificate, a pin to wear on their name badge, and a hard-carved sculpture.

Bell said that she had originally planned to teach after she retired, but when an opportunity presented itself, she decided to teach at TJC. Her teaching focuses not on the practical applications of providing medical care, but on teaching competencies that go beyond basic skills and textbooks.

Bell teaches her students how to be compassionate and care for a patient in the same way as one would for a family member, forming a relationship which is based on trust and patience. She said that showing the emotional side of nursing is what makes teaching such a rewarding experience.
