College in Tyler receives funds for math lab

The Texas Success Center has awarded a grant of $105,000 to Tyler Junior College (TJC) to create two mathematics labs.

These will offer individualized tutoring from peer tutor and math faculty, as well as technology to include graphing calculators and computers.

Brochure printing is often used to provide more information about such labs, their hours and services, and how to sign up for their services.

Director of institutional effectiveness at TJC, Dr. Belinda Prihoda, said that these labs will be of particular importance to those students who can be identified early in their time at the college as needing help. Dr. Prihoda added that being able to monitor the grades of students early in the semester will enable faculty to find those who might be having problems and can be recommended to the math lab. She said that this will help to reduce the number of students who may drop out from the course, and increase their likelihood of success.

Provost and vice president for academic affairs, Dr. Deanna Sheppard, expressed her appreciation to the Texas Success Center for providing this opportunity to enable students at the college to achieve their goals. Dr. Sheppard also thanked the committee at TJC who worked on the grant proposal for their work on what will be a valuable resource for students.
