College in Tyler names finalist for media award

The Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) has named the Drumbeat, the student media program at Tyler Junior College (TJC), as one of seven finalists across the country its Broadcast Pacemaker award. TJC was the only college from Texas to be named for this award.

The ACP Pacemaker award recognizes excellence in student media during the academic year, and is among the most honored and competitive awards in collegiate journalism. Announcements of such distinctions are often made known throughout a college campus and community with banner printing.

There are separate categories for two- and four-year schools. TJC joined San Diego City College in the category for two-year schools, while among the four-year schools are the University of South Carolina, Kent State University, Georgia State University, and Pepperdine University.

Mass communication professor and program coordinator, Derik Gray, commented that it is an award in itself just being a finalist for a Pacemaker. He added that there are two major national collegiate media organizations, the other one being the College Media Association (CMA). He said that The Drumbeat has won several awards from the CMA, but this is the first time in over 10 years that the college has been named a finalist for an ACP Pacemaker.

Winners of the awards will be announced in New Orleans at the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention, which runs from October 13 through October 17.
