College in Tyler enrolls students with a promise

The inaugural class of Promise Scholars is underway at Tyler Junior College (TJC).

This first cohort consist of 400 students from within the tax district of the college, which includes 17 East Texas high schools. The goal of the TJC Promise program is to help students reach their goals for education in high school and college and provides a way for students from East Texas to earn a college degree.

Poster printing is often used at colleges to make known such special programs throughout the community.

Program director of the TJC Promise Scholars, Matthew Ramirez, expressed his excitement about welcoming this first cohort to the college. He added that this is a scholarship program that helps create a culture in these students of going to college that begins in their first year of high school. He said they sign up for the program in ninth grade and are admitted based on their GPA, community service, and attendance in school. He commented that these are tenacious students who have demonstrated their abilities to be successful at the college and after graduation.

Tyler Junior College Foundation scholarships, grants, and contributed funds given specifically to provide scholarships for the TJC Promise program help to fund this program. This ensures the students’ admission to the college and pays for their tuition and fees for the two years they spend there.
