History of The Colony
The community (along with its unusual name) grew out of contracts enacted by Texas, first as a republic and then as a state, between it and groups of investors. The intent of these deals was to encourage settlement in the northern part of Texas. The first contract was signed August 30, 1841, and was between Samuel Browning, the son-in-law of William Smalling Peters, one of the original investors, and the Republic of Texas. The colony was first called Peters Colony.
The first Peters Colony was bounded by the Red River and Big Mineral Creek, and the contract signatories were supposed to recruit at least 200 families in three years, bringing them from outside the Republic of Texas. Single men were also welcomed. Families were given 640 acres, and single men 320 acres. In all, about 1,800 singles and families were recruited to the Peters Colony.
Information and records about the history and early days of The Colony are maintained by a local historical society. Such organizations usually work alongside printing services in producing materials that bring its history to life.
Further development
A number of communities developed within The Colony, including Camey, which became the most successful of the settlements. As often is the case, its growth was enhanced when the railroad came to the area; in this case, it was the St. Louis-San Francisco line, and it began operating in 1902. With the opportunity presented by the railroad, Camey became home to several businesses including a restaurant, blacksmith, grocery store and a cotton gin. It also boasted a school, and though the area returned to agricultural pursuits, the foundation was laid for additional development.
That began with the building of the Lake Lewisville dam, built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam began to fill in 1954 and a new community, Eastvale, was founded in the early 1960s. Eastvale became part of The Colony in 1987. Then in 1973, a land developer from Dallas, Fox and Jacobs, bought about 2,500 acres for a housing development, located on the east shore of Lake Lewisville. F&J called it The Colony to honor the original settlers.

The Colony today
People began to move into homes in The Colony in 1974, and the city incorporated in 1979. Today it has a number of small businesses, churches, a fire department and a public library, among other amenities.
