The city of Dallas will begin dredging operations at Bachman Lake to clear away trash, debris and sediment that has accumulated.

Approved last October by the Dallas City Council, the contractor that was awarded the job will start setting up the equipment at the end of this month with dredging commencing in February once the dredging barge has arrived on site. The dredging operation will pull accumulated sediment of an estimated 370,000 cubic yards from the lake, thereby restoring the water depth to at least eight feet.

The goal of a minimum eight-foot depth was chosen specifically to prevent the accumulation of invasive aquatic vegetation. That, plus the removal of trash and debris from the lake’s bottom, will restore Bachman Lake to its former recreational levels with improved water quality.

The 132-acre Bachman Reservoir was built in 1903 as a water supply for Dallas but is presently used only for recreation. The reservoir is on the Trinity River’s Bachman Branch tributary, and is located on Dallas Love Field’s north side. The last time it was dredged was in 2003.

The dredging is phase one of the Bachman Lake Rehabilitation Project. Phase two will include the rehabilitation of the Bachman spillway and dam.
