Austin will celebrate Halloween as Murder, Mayhem and Misadventures walking tours take place. Free tours will portray the stories of Oakwood residents as presented by actors as they haunt each grave site.
Local legends, Texas governors, and past residents are part of what lies beneath at Austin’s Oakwood Cemetery, and this tour will explain the stories of how they met their demise. Making these unique historical tales come alive, the narratives fit right in with Halloween chills and thrills.
Self-guided tours through the historic cemetery take brave souls to final resting places for many participants in the 1835 Texas Revolution. The Oakwood Chapel is also offering tours, which will be guided by chapel staff and docents.
The 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Save Austin’s Cemeteries, is dedicated to preserving local cemeteries through education and documentation. By keeping the Austin public involved, the historic cemeteries have become cultural resources for residents, students, and visitors. The entity was formed in 2004 by Dale Flatt. All five historic cemeteries in the city are part of the preservation programs.
