The ABC Kite Fest is back for its 97th year in Austin as one of the city’s most popular family traditions.
The spring festival will include all-day family activities featuring a kite-flying contest and a children’s music concert. Friends of the ABC Kite Fest, a non-profit group, will present the event in partnership with sponsors and community members. Groups who organize events such as this frequently use poster printing as a means of informing the public.
The kite festival began in 1929 as a contest to encourage creativity among children and continues today with a range of competitive categories for all ages, from kids to adults.
There will be first, second and third place prizes for kites flown on a 50-foot string, highest angled kite on a 200-foot string, steadiest kite, smallest kite, largest kite, best kite pilot, and more. Dual line kites and power-assisted kites are not eligible to compete.
The festival will also include a kite showcase, instruction in kite making and will feature Moss Fest, the associated children’s music celebration. Over two hours of music, including the Barton Hills Choir, will be presented prior to the kites taking to the air.
The ABC Kite Festival is free to attend. It will take place April 5, 2025 from 10 am to 5 pm at Zilker Park in Austin.
