Dozens of museums and cultural facilities open their doors for free during Austin Museum Day, a celebration of area history, art, science and more.
The Austin Museum Partnership (AMP), a non-profit organization, has presented the community event since 1998 as part of its mandate to bring together and promote the museum community. Members of AMP include museum related businesses and groups as well as individuals who want to further the purpose of the organization.
A few of the museums with memberships in AMP are:
• The Austin Museum of Popular culture, a collection of vintage Posters and memorabilia from the 1960s
• The Harry Ransom Center, a humanities research facility at the University of Texas featuring a collection of photography, film, art, and literature, including unpublished notes and calculations by Albert Einstein.
• The LBJ Presidential Library, dedicated to the life and history of the 36th president, Lyndon Johnson
• Neill-Cochran House Museum, an important historic estate built in 1855
• Texas Medical Association History of Medicine Gallery, where rotating exhibits tell the history of the state's medical system and include artifacts and biographies
• Texas Music Museum, which preserves and presents exhibits related to the history and culture of music in the state
