Barton Springs Pool in Austin, located within Zilker Park which sits on 358 acres, opened to the public just recently.
The pool is the size of three acres, fed from underground springs and stays at a cool 68-70 degrees year-round. The pool was recently closed due to heavy flooding from torrential rains. At one point there was consideration given to not re-opening for 2021. However, decision-makers allowed the pool to open. The public was advised of the recent re-opening in May. It now closes on Thursdays from 9:00 am - 7:00 pm for cleaning and caring for the wildlife as well as guest safety.
The pool draws people from across the region from all walks of life. Famous people and local leaders have all visited the pool including Robert Redford when he was a small boy. Barton Springs has attracted over 800,000 visitors in the past several years.
Endangered species such as the Barton Springs Salamander can be found in the springs, which is a federally protected habitat. The pool has a depth of 18’ with grassy areas surrounding it for lounging. A bathhouse is located adjacent to the pool and offers educational activities and exhibits.
