Notable and novice writers will gather together in late June for the African American Book Festival in Austin.
This year marks the 18th annual event, which returns to the George Washington Carver Museum Many authors will be on hand for book signings, readings, workshops, literary discussions and more. The book festival also features story time for youngsters and other activities for teens.
Books written by, or featuring, African Americans are celebrated at the festival which is the brainchild of Dr. Roz Oliphant Jones, an experienced teacher and bookseller. Years ago, Jones teamed up with writer Evelyn Martin Anderson and the event was born, with the first conference in 2007. Over the years, the Austin African American Book Festival has grown to feature acclaimed writers from across the country, while at the same time providing a venue where local current and emerging African American authors are showcased.
The festival has become so popular that it attracts over 400 attendees each year; readings by acclaimed authors have become are now on an invitation-only basis. A vendor marketplace rounds out the festival activities and allows participants to reach a broad age range of book enthusiasts.
Contributing authors and exhibitors often choose to seek out area Print shops that can provide printing services to promote their books.
