Winners of Austin-based Kirkus Prizes announced
A first-time novelist was among the winners of the 2018 Kirkus Prize, announced at the end of last month.
The award winners, each of whom receive a $50,000 cash prize, were confirmed at a ceremony held at the Austin Central Library. Kirkus Reviews is based in the city.
Ling Ma took home the fiction prize for ‘Severence’, her first novel. In a statement, the Kirkus Prize judges Jessica Jernigan, Sandra Cisneros, and Angela Maria Spring, called the book:
Essayist Rebecca Solnit took home the non-fiction award for her book ‘Call Them by Their True Names: American Crises (and Essays)’.

Ma and Solnit's books were chosen from nearly 1,200 titles that were published between November 1, 2017 and October 31, 2018 and that received starred Kirkus reviews. The young readers winner was chosen from a collection of books published between October 1, 2017 and September 28, 2018.
