It may not be the biggest marathon in the country, but supporters of the Austin Marathon tout it as the best. Next month’s race is set to again attract over 30,000 participants from around the world, many of them repeat registrants.
The scenic 26.2-mile course starts at the Texas State Capital, takes runners past Austin landmarks and murals before heading through downtown where enthusiastic spectators spur them on to the finish line.
Thousands of people turn out to cheer on the athletes, with some neighborhoods embracing the spirit of the event by hosting block parties along the route. Live music and deejays, and post-race food and beverages add to the party atmosphere.
Non-profit organizations also celebrate the annual marathon, benefiting from funds raised by the event. The Austin Marathon Gives program encourages runners to raise money and draw attention to selected official charities. The program has given back to the community in providing over $5.5m to non-profit groups in Central Texas over the last 10 years. In turn, the charities provide vital volunteers to assist with the marathon.
Non-profits who partner with large events such as this often use flyer printing to provide the public with information about their cause.
The Austin Marathon will be held Sunday, February 15 with staggered starts beginning at 6:55 am. A half-marathon distance is also offered.
