Spirit & Splendor: El Greco, Diego Velázquez and the Spanish Baroque is an upcoming Austin exhibit that will feature more than 60 masterpieces spanning 150 years of Spanish painting. The period culminated with Baroque-style art that focused on sensational realism, affluence and religious devotion.
In addition to works by distinguished artists El Greco and Diego Velázquez, the exhibit will also include pieces by later artists who expounded on the Baroque style as it related to colonial Mexico and Peru.
The exhibition is hosted by the Hispanic Society Museum and Library, which has a large collection of early modern Hispanic literature and art at the Blanton Museum of Art. The exhibit pieces have been drawn from this collection.
Over six decades, the museum has become the principal art museum for not only the city of Austin but also for the University of Texas at Austin. It is well known across the country for its creative programming. Special exhibitions and changing installations are made possible by the more than 21,000 artworks in its collection as well as through partnerships with museums worldwide.
Galleries and museums that present major exhibitions often rely on Print shops to create display and advertising materials for their events.
Spirit & Splendor: El Greco, Velázquez, and the Hispanic Baroque opens at the Blanton Museum of Art on August 24, 2025 and is touted as being one of the must-see exhibitions this year.
