An Austin summer tradition turns 60 this year.
The Zilker Summer Musical will once again offer audiences a chance to see live theater, free of charge, at the Beverly S. Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theatre. For its 60th anniversary, the theater is producing ‘All Shook Up’, a jukebox musical set in the 1950s and inspired by the music of Elvis Presley and the plot of ‘Twelfth Night’ by Shakespeare.
Theaters that produce free summer shows can use area Print shops to get the word out to residents and to encourage people to attend.
One of the highlights of the Zilker Summer Musical is that it brings in a diverse audience. As Sue Breland, who has worked with the theater since the mid-1980s, told myStatesman, people attend the summer musical who never see live theater otherwise, due to cost constraints or transportation limitations.
Usually, the audiences for the shows fills the entire hillside. People end up sitting all over the area, with some in spots that cannot even see the playing space. Many bring picnics, blankets, and low chairs to sit on.
All Shook Up runs Thursday through Sunday evenings until August 18. The performances start at 8:15 pm each night, but people are encouraged to arrive early to stake out a spot on the lawn. Coolers, low chairs and blankets are all allowed, but pets are prohibited.
