In just a few weeks, the Austin metro area is scheduled to get its first Aldi location.
The supermarket chain, based in Germany, recently set an opening date for its newest location, in Pflugerville. The store is scheduled to open on November 2.
Although Aldi has several locations in Houston and Dallas, it has yet to make its mark in Austin. The store is different to a typical US supermarket in several ways in that customers need to insert a quarter into their shopping cart. The quarter is returned when the cart is returned to the rack.
Aldi stores are also considerably smaller than standard supermarkets, with the average Aldi taking up about 15,000-square-feet, rather than the 60,000-square-foot footprint many major supermarkets have.
Most Aldi locations produce weekly sales Flyers to let people know what specials are available for the week ahead. Everyday prices at the store tend to be lower than at other grocers, due in part to the fact that Aldi typically only stocks store or generic brands. Its cost-cutting moves, such as requiring people to bag their own groceries and pay a per bag fee for plastic Shopping Bags, also help it keep prices lower than average.
Aldi is not the only German supermarket to set its sights on the Austin area; Lidl, another grocery chain from the European country, also has plans to open a store in the metro area. An opening date has yet to be set.
