Austin brewery launches beer in honor of Texas

A local brewery with a knack for creating beers that honor various aspects of Austin has expanded its horizons.

Independence Brewing recently revealed its newest seasonal brew, called the Native Texan Pilsner. The beer is sold in cans that look as if they are wrapped in the state flag, with a red and white stripe on one side and a white star against a blue background on the other.

Breweries can use graphic design when coming up with ideas for their seasonal releases and other new launches.

It is not just the name of the beer and the design of the can that serve as an ode to the Lonestar State. The style, a pilsner, is similar to the traditional European beers enjoyed by people from Germany and what is now the Czech Republic when they settled in the Hill Country area almost two centuries ago.

Native Texan is made with a German pilsner malt, plus Czech and German noble hops and a unique Augustiner yeast. It has an ABV of 5%.

The pilsner is actually the brewery's second lager-style beer this year. In the spring, it released Cowboys from Helles, which was less slightly less hoppy than the Native Texan. Other beers from the brewery include Liberty Lunch IPA, which is named after an old Austin music venue and the Power & Light Pale Ale, which is named for the Seaholm Power Plant.
