Ground has been broken on the Spartanburg Joint Government Center at the site of the existing Spartanburg City Hall.
Banner printing is a popular choice for onsite signage, effectively notifying city and county residents about upcoming projects like this one.
The first of its kind in South Carolina, the facility will house both city and county officials in one building. This facility will span 215,000 square feet and will be five stories tall. It will have shared spaces for council chambers, gathering areas for the public, multi-family style apartments, and a parking garage with room for 1,000 vehicles.
The cost to build the new Government Center is expected to be $101m. Construction of the Government Center was approved in 2017. Funds for the project were raised through the Capital Penny Sales Tax, which was also approved by voters, in addition to other construction and road efforts.
Mayor Jerome Rice said the penny tax enabled a wide range of people to contribute to the project, including residents, visitors to the city, and even those just driving through Spartanburg.
This marks the latest in a series of developments transforming downtown Spartanburg, including a planetarium addition at the library and a new courthouse. The city also recently unveiled a state-of-the-art baseball stadium.
The Joint Government Center is expected to open in 2027.
