Spartanburg to open planetarium

The Spartanburg Planetarium Learning Center is opening this week.

Located on the corner of Church and Broad Streets, the new facility spans 28,000 square feet and will have a theater with 136 seats and a dome that is 50 feet wide. It will also have a maker lab which will be named for Kitty Black Perkins, a native of Spartanburg and known for being a designer for Barbie by Mattel, and meeting space. The lobby will have a Foucault Pendulum that will be suspended from the ceiling. The facility also features planters, seating for the public, and trees at two different entrances—one on Board Street and the other on Church Street, with an outdoor plaza.

Private donations, construction bonds issued by the county, and the fund balance of the library covered the costs of building the planetarium. Todd Stephens, Spartanburg County Librarian, expressed excitement about the opening of this building and is looking forward to community interactions with the facility.

The Spartanburg Planetarium Learning Center will be opening this Friday October 17. There will be a grand opening event from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on that day that will include demonstrations and tours with information provided about the planetarium and its offerings for the public. This is an ideal opportunity for local Print shops to contribute to such events with the creation of Flyers and Brochures containing more details about such offerings.
