The second phase of the Mary H Wright Greenway trail on the south side of Spartanburg has been approved by the Spartanburg City Council.
This phase is an extension of the trail that will establish two new spurs for the greenway, both of which will run from its end in the south at the intersection of Hudson L Barksdale Boulevard and Marion Avenue. The other spur will come from the eastern side to the intersection of Cemetery and Duncan Streets and then go south to the intersection of Caulder Avenue and Hudson L Barksdale Boulevard.
These new extensions will better connect the Southside community of the city and to other trails in the area such as the trails at Duncan Park, the downtown connector of Hub City Hopper, and the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail. Local Print shops can help spread the word about such additions with Flyers, Posters, and other printed materials.
The lowest bidder on the project was Bird Corporation, based in Inman, with a price of $468,300. An amount of $365,228 will be covered by grant funding from the state and the remainder to be covered by the city.
These extensions add to the Daniel Morgan Trail System, which covers 55 miles and was organized by the nonprofit, Play, Advocate, Play Well or PAL.
Construction is expected to begin soon.
