Food drive in Middletown deemed huge success

The success of the Middletown Meals Community Challenge is being celebrated in the town.

Each week during the fall the drive for food and supplies led by the Town Council met its goal by gathering over 250 items that are very much needed for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center in Newport. The Council matched each of the 250 items with donations of its own. The most needed items included soap, canned red kidney beans, hearty soups, chili, stews, and cereal.

President of the Town Council, Paul M. Rodrigues, said that what the MLK Center and Middletown was able to accomplish was amazing. He added his thanks to everyone who contributed and expressed his happiness that all the service providers in the community and the MLK Center are around to help those in need.

Lori Tuner, the Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships for Middletown, led a team to establish drop-off locations in each municipal building. Flyer printing can be used to help spread the word about such food drives and where needed food can be dropped off.

This food drive resonated with many in town as each Friday, donations from Middletown were dropped off at the MLK Center and then determined how to distribute the food.

The MLK Center and local leaders are hoping to make this an annual drive very fall.
