A new officer has joined the Middletown Police Department.
His name is Luke and he is a black labrador retriever and 12 weeks old. His handler is Officer David Theberge. Luke is the first Comfort and dog in the department.
News of such new additions to a department can be made known throughout a community with flyer printing.
Luke and Officer Theberge are part of the Community Policing Division at the Middletown Police Department. Theberge said that the department was able to select him from the litter. He currently weighs 23 pounds and is expected to weigh 9=80 to 90 pounds when he is.fully grown.
Dame Dog Labradors in Foster donated Luke to the department. Wag Nation in Newport is his sponsor which feeds and outfits him.
Olivia Garcia, animal control officer, expressed her delight in this new addition to the department. Garcia said that he is one of three dogs in the department. The other two dogs are German Shepards, named Storm and Tex.
Garica added that Luke is not the stereotypical K-9. She said that people cuddle and play with their pets, but such is not the case with dogs in the Police Department. All three dogs have a special job—the two German Shepards are for the safety of the community while Luke is for the morale of the department as well as that of the community.
