A musket salute and wreath laying ceremony to mark the 248th anniversary of the Battle of Rhode will be held by the Butts Hill Fort Restoration Committee of the Battle of Rhode Island Association later this month.
It will take place in Portsmouth, so residents of nearby Middletown who are interested in commemorating the battle might want to attend this event.
The battle itself was a tactical deadlock. Heavy casualties were suffered by both sides, but the British retained control of Aquidneck Island, although the battle was called a stalemate by historians. Butts Hill Fort served as headquarters for the partier forces of General John Sullivan.
The public is invited to attend. There will be parking at the tennis courts at Portsmouth High School and at the Wealth Management lot Sprague Street on the top of Dyer Street.
Such events often rely on poster printing to promote themselves throughout a region with more details about parking, the time of the event, and other pertinent information.
The event will take place at Butts Hill Fort on Butts Street. People are welcome to arrive as of 6:30 pm with the ceremony beginning at 7:00 pm. This will be on Saturday, August 29. The organizers are also interested in hearing from reenactors who would like to participate.
