School breaks ground in Middletown

The ground has been broken on a new middle high school in Middletown.

The voters approved a bond of $190 million in 2023 to build the new facility for those children in grades 6 through 12. The new school is on the fields that are adjacent to the Gaudet Middle School. The two schools, the middle school and high school, will be separate but there will be a connection between the two buildings.

Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents of such new projects and their impact on a community.

Angélica Infante-Green, Education Commissioner for Rhode Island, said that constructing new buildings is now a priority in the state, adding that 50 new schools are currently under construction. She said that this is not happening in any other state. The existing high school will then be renovated for grades two through five and will also become the home for the facilities department and school administration.

Refurbishing Forest Avenue Elementary School will also take place, and this will become the home for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade. Aquidneck Elementary School will no longer be used, and it will become a community center. The buildings that are currently used for administration will go to the town and are being considered for conversion into affordable housing.

The school is expected to open for the 2027-28 academic year.
