Theater fun in Leechburg

Upcoming weekends will provide an opportunity for theatergoers to enjoy a play in Leechburg.

“Baboon,” a play directed by Rennick Steele, who also wrote the piece, will be performed at The Steele Farmstead during the month of August. A description of the play calls it:

“A turvy-topsy-wacky-upside-down comedy about the origin of the human species.”

The work is a spoof of ethnic stereotyping, featuring the Higginbottoms, a family of high-class Boston Brahmins whose world view is shaken by their interactions with a temporary secretary who happens to be Polish-American, and a clever janitor who is a spy for the Russians.

Rennick Steele, the author, is a co-founder of the Freeport Theatre Festival, established in 1989. The Steeles set up the theater to lift the spirits of residents, who live in an area that was depressed with the loss of the steel industry. The couple wanted plays that would entertain and cheer people, as well as giving young people the experience of working in theater, something most had never had.

They also wanted to provide a platform for local playwrights to showcase their new works, and thus, the festival is the perfect place for Rennick Steele’s play.

The play will be performed on weekends. The dates are August 11, 12, and 13; 18, 19, and 20; and 25, 26, and 27. The curtain goes up at 7:00 pm for all performances. When live performances like this are scheduled, organizers can use poster printing to create inviting advertising.
