A convenience store with fresh items opened recently in Leechburg.
Market on Second sells grab-and-go items made from scratch every day. They include sides, sandwiches, soups, and more. Jennifer Tony, who also owns Beermuda and several other businesses, said she opened the store because she has a passion for pierogies, and for cooking in general.
Tony’s workday starts at about 5:00 am every day, when she and a group of women who are retired start cooking, using locally sourced, fresh-from-the-field ingredients whenever possible. A chili dish used organic peppers from Anarchy Farms, located in Gilpin, and most vegetables come from Ambrose Farms in Smicksburg, which is owned by the Amish. New Kensington’s Steel Cup Coffee Roasters supply the coffee.
Tony makes all the food in small batches, and notes that the cooler is never filled, allowing air to circulate and keep the food fresh. Tony and her crew restock the coolers twice each day, at about 11:00 am and again at 3:30 pm. Some of the meals include BBQ beef brisket, lasagna, and, of course, pierogies.
The market is open from 11:00 am until 12:00 midnight, which is rare for a small town. Tony’s extended hours are to give local shift workers a chance to grab something so they can have a hot meal when they get home.
