Leechburg officials consider amending ordinance

Tom Foster, the fire chief, urged the Leechburg council to amend an ordinance requiring all buildings and homes to have their addresses easily visible.
In order for first responders to get to the correct address as quickly as possible, it is necessary for addresses to be accurate and easy to see. Foster also wants to ensure the ordinance, once modified, is enforced. The original went into effect in 2013.

Foster noted that:

“Having addresses on houses certainly would help the fire department, the ambulance service and the police department responding to people’s homes for emergencies.”

He added that he has been involved with the local fire service for almost 50 years, as well as serving on the board of directors of a local ambulance service. He said people who are calling for help need it immediately, so the house numbers must be clear.

The ordinance currently in effect says numbers have to be mounted horizontally, made of reflective material, and four inches tall at a minimum.

Foster said changes to the ordinance include removing the requirement to place the numbers horizontally and changing the size requirement to make installation earlier for property owners. He added he doesn’t particularly care what changes are made if first responders can see the house numbers from the street.

The issue will be considered in December and if approved, passed in January. Officials can use flyer printing to create an informative brochure for residents describing issues like these.
