Leechburg names new mayor

A new major has been appointed in Leechburg.

Mayor Wayne Dobbs passed away unexpectedly at the beginning of the month, leaving it to the Borough Council to appoint his replacement, with Tony Roppolo now taking the position. Roppolo has held the position before, and has also served on the council, and was sworn in last week.

Two Leechburg residents sent Letters of Interest to the council, according to its president, Tom Foster. Roppolo authored one, while the other was submitted by Doreen Smeal. The council was tied until Foster broke the stalemate by voting for Roppolo, citing Roppolo’s experience with the office. When situations like this arise, new Business Cards can be printed to indicate the individual’s title.

For his part, Roppolo was interested because he was familiar with both the council and the position of mayor, and served in the position for a full term. He said:

“I thought I could help my community here. I was honored by the fact they appointed me.”

Dobbs, like Roppolo, was also a council member, where he served for about 18 months until he was appointed to the position of mayor. He later won the election for the office. Dobbs, who backed many community projects, won over $100,000 in grants from Armstrong County as mayor.

Smeal spoke at a recent meeting, citing her qualifications and desire to serve. Although he voted for Roppolo, Foster urged her to run for mayor again when the seat is open.
