Leechburg goes pink to fight cancer

An event is coming up that will give Leechburg residents a chance to help in the fight against cancer.

Every September, Leechburg celebrates Pink Day to raise money for cancer research. In addition to this event, two other festivals are held for this cause, the Food Truck Festival, and the King Lou Hock and the Flying Musical Circus Goes Pink 3, which is coming up in January.

In 2011, Vicki and Gary Peterman, local business owners, established Leechburg’s Pink Day Celebration and Fundraiser. The Petermans, who owned a garden center, started an event with a pink hydrangea bush at its center. Every time they sold this plant, they would make a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

These beginnings transformed into Pink Day, which is held every September on Market Street. A three-block area is closed to traffic, which creates the atmosphere of a festival. The festivities last the entire day, with as many as 100 vendors taking part. Raffles, children’s activities, live entertainment, and food vendors are on hand. Local organizations and businesses support Pink Day, making the event enjoyable for everyone.

As of the end of 2021, Leechburg’s efforts have donated over $170,000 to the BCRF.

Lou Hock and the Flying Musical Circus Goes Pink 3 is scheduled all day January 23, from 5:00am until 11:55pm, at the Marconi Club in Leechburg. Organizers of events like this can make them more memorable by using flyer printing to create local advertising.
