Course in Canonsburg teaches critical thinking
An upcoming course for first responders will aim to teach them how to improve critical thinking skills.
The Volunteer & Combination Officers Section (VCOS), which is a section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, is now offering a course called the Critical Thinking Academy.
VCOS defines critical thinking as:
Critical thinking is vital to problem solving and decision making and is particularly important to fire service leaders who often have to make decisions quickly. To succeed, leaders have to recognize both the immediate hazards and the various courses of action available.
The Academy adds another skill set, learning how to act when it is important to deliberate beforehand, as well as learning how to handle several leadership, administrative, organizational, and interpersonal matters that benefit from a leader’s well-considered decisions.
In the Academy, students will learn how to take a step back to consider problems before deciding, when to listen and when to suggest solutions, how to analyze problems to discover effective solutions, how to better explain their decisions and ideas, how to support effective leadership communications and problem-solving, and how to integrate critical thinking into the behavior of a leader. When they organize events like this, planners often use brochure printing to create course materials.
The Critical Thinking Academy will teach basic skills so that leaders can practice them repeatedly and is scheduled for March 8 and 9 in Canonsburg. Interested parties can contact VCOS directly for more information.
