Tigard to receive funds for electric school buses

Portland General Electric (PGE) will be providing two new electric school buses to the Tigard-Tualatin School District. The funding will be coming from the Electric School Bus Fund for 2022.

The school district was selected for these buses based on its commitment to incorporate the vehicles into student education around climate science, and to meet the needs of underserved communities.

President and CEO of Portland General Electric, Maria Pope, said that electrifying transportation will help to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases and is important towards reaching the goal of clean energy for all the people in the state. Pope added that moving to electricity-powered buses will ensure many benefits for children and the community. News about such programs and their benefits is often made known throughout the community with flyer printing.

Dr. Sue Rieke-Smith, superintendent of the Tigard-Tualatin School District, expressed her pleasure in receiving this support from PGE. Rieke-Smith added that the timing for this is ideal as a climate leadership committee is being set up in the district created by a group of students from the high school who approached the School Board last spring about this issue.

This is the third year that PGE is awarding grants for electric school buses. Funds from PGE cover the incremental cost of electric school buses and provide up to $50,000 towards the installation of infrastructure for charging stations.
