Tigard to build public safety and public works building

Language for a ballot measure for a bond to replace the police and public works facility has been approved by city officials from Tigard.

The bond is for $150 million and will cost about 77 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value to build a facility to house the two departments on property that the city owns on Southwest Wall Street. There would also be space in the facility for storage onsite of criminal evidence as well as space for training on site so police officers would not have to leave the campus for instruction.

Whenever projects like these are announced, more details on new facilities can be provided with brochure printing.

Mayor Yi-Kang Hu said that the current buildings for the police and public works departments were built when the city was much smaller. Since then, the population of the city has tripled with 40,000 more residents. The mayor pointed out that at that time, there were 20 police officers in the city and now there are close to 70, including 16 support staff.

He also added that there comes a time when repairing an aging structure is not a choice that is best for the community and building a new facility would also ensure Tigard can continue to provide reliable services for many years to come.

Ballots are expected to be mailed April 29.
