Tigard teacher receives regional honor

Naheed Brown, a first-grade teacher from Tigard, was one of three teachers in the Portland area who won honors as regional teacher of the year from the Oregon Department of Education.

There are 13 regional winners and they are all eligible to be named teacher of the year for Oregon in September.

In order to receive this honor, those who applied needed to submit letters of support and testimonials from colleagues, superintendents, and principals. Then, a panel of judges from each region reviews the applications based on professional development, understanding of educational issues, involvement in the community, and instructional expertise, among other criteria.

Susan Stark Hayden, district communications director for Tigard, said that Brown has been at the Mary Woodward Elementary School since 2007 and teaches first grade. Her approach to teaching the curriculum is creative and her students find the work challenging. She adds that they thoroughly enjoy having Brown as a teacher.

Brown has also been involved in leading the equity efforts of the Tigard-Tualatin school district and has been a member of the equity team for the district and her school. Two afternoons a week, she holds an after-school homework club for English language learners.

Schools and districts such as this often carry out poster printing and display the Posters to promote announce such accomplishments and what they mean for the school and district.
