Tigard police focus on seat belt enforcement campaign

Motorists around Tigard, Oregon, may see an increase in poster and flyer printing along the major motorways reminding them to secure their belts and double check their child safety seats. Police in Tigard are again participating in a nationwide campaign that focuses on encouraging people to stay safe in their cars.

The two week campaign, often called “Click-It or Ticket”, aims to help motorists obey, understand, and respect the laws and reasoning behind restraints in vehicles. Tigard Police plans to focus on enforcement on various days and times.

Dedicated federal funding supports the overtime pay that makes the program possible.

Along with outlining the importance of restraints, officers will stop drivers using a cell phone or other communication devices, as well as those committing speed violations.

Recent reports suggest that Tigard motorists comply with the laws regarding these things about 97% of the time, which is an improvement over the national average of around 80%. Still, half of all the motor vehicle fatalities that occurred in Oregon were complicated by lack of seat belt usage.

Tigard police regularly remind motorists that to keep all travelers safe on roadways, traffic laws are crucial. Travelers can learn more about “Click-It or Ticket” at the national website, or at the Tigard Police’s website.
