Tigard builds inclusive playground for children

A new inclusive playground is currently under construction in Tigard. It will be the largest playground to come to Oregon that can be used by children of all abilities.

The playground is at Cook Park and is expected to cost $1.2m to build. Ross Recreation designed the park with inspiration from feedback from the community. Len Fransen from Ross Recreation said that they met with parents and with children who use wheelchairs. He said a major goal of the park was to ensure that these children would still be able to play with other kids in the park.

Franson said the park has been designed with access ramps and a lot of space for wheelchairs as well as room for friends and parents. There is also the “We-Go-Round,” which is similar to the teacups at Disneyland and accommodates two children in wheelchairs.

Inclusively was also a priority in the materials selected for playground. The turf is made of material such that wheelchairs easily maneuver on it, but it also adds a layer of protection for children with cochlear implants and provides sensory stimulation for children with autism.

Local Print shops can help spread the word about such parks and their unique features with Flyers, Brochures, and other printed materials.

Franson noted that many features in the playground are the first in the industry.
